An extraordinary 4000-mile Odyssey across America's diverse landscapes.
In this captivating reimagining of Steinbeck's Travels with Charlie, a modern-day Odysseus, accompanied by his dog, navigates the U.S. highways along with the labyrinth of his own mind in a transformative journey.
It is a tale that blends the introspective depth of Thoreau’s Walden with Edward Abbey’s Fools Progress and the restless spirit of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. From the deserts of Arizona to the badlands of North Dakota and the coasts of Maine, our protagonist encounters the spectral presence of legendary authors who have shaped America's literary consciousness and, through a reading list gone awry, guide his path.
A pilgrimage through the landscapes of heart and mind this is an exploration of what it means to be truly American. A page-turner in an age of rapid change, echoing Steinbeck's own quest to rediscover his country.
Today, while test-driving my new AirPods, I walked down the street and, by chance, met a 97-year-old named Peter Mounsey. He was pretty incredible. In 1958, with his wife Lesley, Peter set out from Sydney aboard the yacht Larapinta and returned four years later. Anyone who has read The King of the Coral Sea, which also took place in 1958, will soon understand why I had to instantly give him a copy.
His sailing voyage around the world took them across the Indian Ocean to South Africa, up the Atlantic to England, then home via the West Indies, Panama Canal, and South Pacific Islands, returning in 1961.
Their journey was notable for being a husband-and-wife adventure at a time when such voyages were rare. Lesley is also recognized as probably the first Australian woman to sail around the world on a yacht. He was also associated with the Australia II America`s Cup challenge in 1983.
He went to sea at age 14 in the merchant service during World War II, serving as a deck boy and credited with excellent eyesight for spotting Japanese craft. He witnessed several ships being torpedoed off the Australian coast.
Peter is known as the “million-mile man” with over a million nautical miles to his name and has sailed around the world twice. In his later years, he pursued land speed records on a vintage Velocette motorcycle, reaching over 90 mph at age 90+.
He is revered as a trailblazer in Australian sailing and is featured in numerous sailing histories and news stories. Peter Mounsey’s life is a remarkable testament to adventure, resilience, and a lifelong passion for the sea.

My first Pranafest, hopefully not the last. And so good to catch up with old friends. Steve and I met 40 years ago, in Israel, when I was living in a shack in the hills and he on the beach.

Walt Whitman knew the dangers of following fools and tyrants. Here he is warning us to Question Authority. I always liked the quote, but since the election i wanted a constant reminder so I had it tattoed on my calve.
